My Super Connector Meets Victoria Salem

1. Tell me a bit about your business – when it started and what are your main services?

I started my business The Golden Network in March 2014. We started as a networking club and community for finance professionals and have developed our services since then. First of all, the community is now open to other industries, I believe it is not so much what you do but who you know instead.  Members of The Golden Network are like-minded professionals and our team reviews all applications before acceptance.

Soon after launching, I started working with many brands in London helping them achieve more through their own events.  I still successfully run those consultancy services and recently secured a contract with a property investment firm.

Back in 2015, I realised the lack in understanding of what networking was really about and the growing demand for workshops and training.  This is when I developed my business networking skills workshop, which was delivered for the first time at the London School of Business and Finance. They were so happy about the workshop and the feedback was so positive that they referred me to the Queen Mary University and the LIBF etc.  After 4 years of running many workshops and training with universities and business schools, I decided to take that offering further and provide training to corporates as well. The Golden Network Coaching launched in February 2019! I am now working with very high profile coaches (including Jennifer Corcoran!) and provide a variety of courses, training and monthly workshops.

I am absolutely passionate about networking and strongly believe in the power of building a strong network – I therefore truly enjoy helping my clients to get more success and better results when they network, whether it is online or face-to-face. I do that by helping them to set up clearer goals, define a more efficient strategy and also by becoming more confident about themselves and their brand.

2. What was the main driver for starting your own business?

From very early on, I knew I wanted to be running my own business and do something linked to my passion.

The main drivers were:

  • the flexibility running my own business gives me
  • the positive impact and learning opportunities I can offer my clients via the training and workshops
  • the satisfaction I get from choosing who I work with and what I focus on

Just pure pleasure really!

3. What gets you up in the morning?

I absolutely love networking and connecting with others so that really gets me up in the morning. I always have a few weekly networking events to either attend or that I organize myself and I always have at least one daily meeting and/or phone call.  I am a social butterfly!

4. If you could change one thing about your first year (or first few years) in business, what would it be?

I would change my mindset to be more open and less black or white. In business, it is important to look at the grey areas and also all the other colors of the rainbow! One opportunity might not be as straightforward as others and there is always some positive in looking at all the possible options.

5. What is your biggest achievement to date?

To have built a community and business from scratch including relationships with brands such as Hilton, BMW, Brioni and many others.

6. What has been your biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge was to do it all on my own. Although it has allowed me to move faster at time, it also felt lonely from time to time and I sometimes wished I had a business partner(s) to brainstorm with and bounce back ideas.

7. What would be your number one tip for other entrepreneurs who want to develop their personal brand (related to their industry / specialism)?

Be clear on your uniqueness and USP: what values do you bring to your existing clients and why they should choose you as opposed to your competitor(s).

And persevere until you get to where you want to be, do not give up until you are there!

8. What advice would you give to other women thinking of starting their own business?

Understand what is it that you are really good at and focus on it. Surround yourself with people you trust and people who will support you. When you start your own business, time is key, as you don’t have much of it so where you spend it is crucial.

Last but not least, be positive and smile! It is a journey and it should be enjoyable.

9. Lastly, what is your preferred way of networking on LinkedIn? Is it via posts on the feed, networking in groups or via direct message and why?

I love networking via the news feed – I love being able to add value to my contact’s posts, thoughts and activity. Equally I also love being able to share news about myself or my businesses; and also love seeing the response from my network!
