Why LinkedIn Career Readiness Should Start Before Graduation

“I’ll create a LinkedIn profile once I’ve got a job.”

It’s one of the most common things I hear from students.

But by then, they may have already missed months of opportunities:

• Opportunities to connect with alumni.
• To learn from people already working in their chosen industry.
• To understand what employers are looking for.
• And, perhaps most importantly, to build confidence before they need it.

The graduate market has changed.

A degree still matters but employers are increasingly looking beyond academic achievement.

They’re looking for graduates who can demonstrate confidence, professionalism and the ability to build relationships.

These aren’t “nice-to-have” skills.  They’re becoming part of what makes someone employable.

And they aren’t developed in the final few weeks before graduation.

They’re built and honed over time.

We need to stop thinking about LinkedIn as an online CV.

We need to start thinking about it as a career readiness tool.

Too often, LinkedIn is introduced to students during their final year.
At exactly the point when they’re already juggling dissertations, exams and graduate applications.

Imagine if students started using LinkedIn in their first or second year – not to look for jobs, but to:

• follow organisations they’re interested in
• connect with peers and alumni
• explore different career paths
• understand industry trends
• build confidence talking to professionals
• develop a professional digital presence

By graduation, they wouldn’t just have a profile.

They’d have a professional network in place and feel far more confident using it.

In fact, students can join LinkedIn from the age of 16.

Imagine the difference it could make if they began exploring careers, connecting with professionals and developing their digital presence throughout their education.

Confidence doesn’t come before taking action.

It comes because of it.

Many students worry about getting LinkedIn wrong.

They don’t know what to write, who to connect with or whether they’ll sound professional enough.

That’s completely understandable.

Professional networking isn’t something most people are ever taught.

But every profile update, every connection request and every conversation builds confidence.

Networking is a skill.

Like any skill, it gets easier with practice.

“But I don’t have enough experience…”

You already have more experience than you think.

• University projects.
• Placements.
• Volunteering.
• Part-time jobs.
• Societies.
• Sport.
• Dissertations.
• Leadership roles.

Every one of these experiences says something about who you are and what you can contribute.

Recruiters aren’t only recruiting experience, they’re recruiting potential.

Career readiness is about far more than creating a profile

This is why I talk about LinkedIn Career Readiness rather than LinkedIn training.

The goal isn’t simply to help students create a profile.  It’s to help them become confident future professionals.  That means learning how to:

• communicate their strengths
• build meaningful professional relationships
• understand digital etiquette
• position themselves professionally
• develop their personal brand
• create opportunities before they need them

These aren’t LinkedIn skills, they’re career skills.

And they’ll continue to serve students long after they’ve graduated.

How universities can make a difference

Universities already do an incredible job preparing students academically.

LinkedIn Career Readiness isn’t about replacing that work – it’s about complementing it.

It helps students develop the confidence, visibility and relationship-building skills that employers increasingly value.

Career readiness doesn’t start when students begin applying for jobs.

It starts the moment they begin thinking about their future.

Universities have an incredible opportunity to help students graduate with more than a degree.

They can help them graduate with confidence, connections and professional visibility and with the skills they’ll continue to use throughout their careers.
